Introduction of The Project
This
project is about Rainforests. This is in the standard of grade 5 students. I have given a reference in the reference page to the websites
where I found the information included in this project. I am publishing this project with the intention of providing students with easy excess to the information they need on the topic.

Introduction of Rainforest
A Rainforest can be described as a
tall, dense jungle. The reason it is
called a "rain" forest is because of the high amount of rainfall it
gets per year. The climate of a rain
forest is very hot and humid so the animals and plants that exist there must
learn to adapt to this climate. There are many rainforests all over the world,
some bigger than others. They are all unique and have their own plants,
insects, and animals.
Importance of Rainforest
1-They provide a habitat for plants and animals
2- Tropical
forests regulate global and regional climate-systems by acting as heat and
water pumps.
3- Prevention of Flooding, Soil Loss and
Siltation
4- Rainforests
are a vital source of medicines.
5- Rainforests also offer a bounty of foods.
Destruction of Rainforest
In the past 50 years much of the rainforest in
Africa and Asia has been destroyed
- Many
rainforests in Central and South America have been burnt down to make way for
cattle farming
- Timber
companies cut down huge trees such as mahogany and teak and sell them to other
countries to make furniture.
The forests are
cut down to make way for vast plantations where products such as bananas, palm
oil, pineapple, sugar cane, tea and coffee are grown.
The rainforests have to be removed in order to
extract minerals and metals such as diamonds, oil, and gold.
Strata
of a Rainforest
"Strata" means "layers."
Scientists divide rainforests into different strata for easy reference.
EMERGENTS: Giant trees that are much higher than the average
canopy height. It houses many birds and insects.
CANOPY: The upper parts of the trees. This leafy environment is
full of life in a tropical rainforest and includes: insects, birds, reptiles,
mammals, and more.
UNDERSTORY: A dark, cool environment under the leaves but over
the ground.
FOREST FLOOR: Teeming with animal life, especially insects. The
largest animals in the rainforest generally live here.
Rainforest Animals
|
Emergents:- Scarlet Macaw |
|
Canopy:- Howler Monkey |

Understory:- Red-eyed Tree Frogs

Forest Floor:- Anteaters |
Golden Lion Tamarin
The golden lion tamarin gets its
name from its bright reddish orange pelage and the extra long hairs around the
face ears which give it distinctive mane. These interesting animals are
critically endangered, as are many of the forests in which they live are
disappearing due to ever-expanding logging, agriculture, and industry. Unfortunately, the golden lion tamarin is in
danger of vanishing with them.
Conclusion
In
the past 50 years much of the rainforest in Africa and Asia has been destroyed.
Large areas of rainforest are being cut down, often in order to remove just a
few logs, and rainforest is being destroyed at double the rate of all previous
estimates. Unfortunately this means that there is a very high rate of
extinction, as the wildlife depending on the forest dies with it.
